The Bath Orchestral Gala Concert is the first exciting performance in the new ‘Side-by-Side’ partnership between Bath Philharmonia and King Edward’s School’s Senior Orchestra. This concert will see both ensembles performing together in a programme that ranges from classical masterpieces, such as Hector Berlioz’s Marche au Supplice, to contemporary film and video game scores which include Star Wars: The Phantom Menace – The Duel of Fates, Pirates of the Caribbean, Halo, Civilisation IV and Kingdom of Hearts.
The concert will see both orchestras showcasing some of their own repertoire including an overture by Rossini as well as Bath Phil being joined by King Edward’s School’s Senior Choir in music from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by John Williams.
The main focus of the partnership is for our young players to experience playing next to, and learning from professional musicians in a workshop and performance setting. To stretch our most gifted musicians, Bath Phil will be accompanying three of our top instrumental soloists in movements from fine concertos by Johann Hummel, Alexander Glazunov and Johann Neruda.
The last thrilling element to this concert will be the world première of Fusion, a new work commissioned for the evening from King Edward’s School’s resident composer, Mark Boden. This highly energetic and moving piece has been especially written for the two orchestras to play Side-by-Side.
