Somerset Life editor Charlotte Skidmore sees if this restaurant chain can bring a bit of French je ne sais quoi to a Somerset seaside town

It’s tricky sometimes isn’t it when you’ve been somewhere before for a meal and then it changes name and appearance and you’re asked to compare the two? Especially when it used to be an Italian-style restaurant and now it’s a French bistro. In my opinion the rotunda-style building on Weston seafront lacked a little character and warmth under its previous management. But it’s all change under the name of Bistrot Pierre.

Weston seafront gets the extremes of weather, so it’s all lovely in the height of the summer when the sun is shining in a clear sky, but when autumn and winter start creeping up, you need a cosy retreat to escape to. And here we have it.

First impressions of this restaurant are really good - a stylish bar on the ground floor where you can meet for a drink with friends and a bustling, but not hectic, and beautifully-decorated open plan bistro style restaurant on the upper level. The perfect place to catch the end of a sunset on our visit.

Attentive staff were pretty on the ball for a fairly new opening and the food that followed was really good quality with care taken in the presentation.

My dining partner enjoyed a perfectly cooked plate of calamari to start - crispy batter on the outside and not too chewy in the middle. She then had the rump pave steak, which was ‘one of the best steaks I’ve had’ I quote. Those of you who have read my reviews before know it’s hard for me to stay away from the steak, but I managed it in favour of something new - the fish bouillabaisse.

Packed with with sea bream, mussels, king prawns, clams and smoked haddock served with rouille, aged gruyère and grilled sourdough toast, each mouthful exploded with juicy, tender fish and fresh seafood along with the tang from the jus. Well done Bistrot Pierre - I think you may have succeeded where others have struggled in this spot in Weston-super-Mare.

Long may you continue to bring your touch of French class to my home town.
