Somerset Life Food & Drink Awards 2016: Gastro Pub of the Year

Archant

We asked readers to nominate establishments that offer exceptional food and drink. The winner of this category needed to stock a wide range of real ales, preferably supporting local breweries. It also needed to have a menu which champions local food and provide a warm welcome and a friendly goodbye - and everything that happens in between.

The Somerset Life Food & Drink Awards are one of the biggest events in the local calendar and it is hugely anticipated by the region’s food and drink industry all year round.

We champion the best local producers, suppliers and businesses that are passionate about Somerset and the future of our local environment.

Thanks to both the nominations of the public and our well-respected judges, we have picked a winner worthy of the ‘Gastro Pub of the Year’.

This year’s finalists

The Duck at Burtle, Burtle

The recently renovated Duck at Burtle offers a classic pub menu that is well executed and varied. With beautiful décor and even more beautiful views, this rural pub has an atmosphere that is both slick and stylish while remaining laid back and relaxed. The welcome is warm and the staff friendly and efficient.

The Monkton Inn

Though you may be fooled by its rural village setting, this traditional country pub in West Monkton is serving anything but traditional country pub grub. From Ostrich steaks to crocodile burger, the owners offer a mix of classic British fare alongside exotic and interesting dishes inspired by their time spent living in South Africa. The welcoming staff know the menu inside out and are more than happy to answer any questions- as our judges found out!

And the winner is…

The White Post, Rimpton

The White Post, which lies on the Somerset/Dorset border, serves a menu filled with fresh local ingredients. Whether it’s their famous Sunday roast, the innovative 10 course tasting menus or their classic pub grub, our readers raved about the amazing food and service at the White Post.

The Gastro Pub Year Award is sponsored by Climate Roofs
