Somerset Life Food & Drink Awards 2016: Newcomer of the Year
PUBLISHED: 11:54 16 September 2016
This category was open to anyone in the food or drink business who has started a new business venture within the last 18 months. We know it isn’t easy starting afresh, so we wanted to champion new food and drink businesses and the impact they have made on their local community.
The Somerset Life Food & Drink Awards are one of the biggest events in the local calendar and it is hugely anticipated by the region’s food and drink industry all year round.
We champion the best local producers, suppliers and businesses that are passionate about Somerset and the future of our local environment.
Thanks to both the nominations of the public and our well-respected judges, we have picked a winner worthy of the ‘Newcomer of the Year Award’.
This year’s finalists
The charming tea room in the centre of Wellington attracts guests of all ages who praise the friendly, caring staff, peaceful environment and of course the fabulous cream teas, cakes and lunches.
Having been recently transformed into a chic, modern gastropub, the Duck at Burtle has been described as a true asset to the local area, providing locals with a much needed place to enjoy high quality food, drink and service without the travel.
And the winner is…
Wookey Hub is a newly opened cafe and shop in the village of Wookey. From the outset Andy Childs has placed the community at its heart. Not only does he serve what our readers describe as the best coffee and cake for miles around, he also welcomes all with a smile and friendly chatter. One local said ‘All it took was one person to have a little faith and hey presto- the whole community has been brought together over a slice of cake and a cup of coffee.’
