‘Tis the season to be jolly! The whole of Somerset will be full of festivities with plenty of charming Christmas markets, late night shopping opportunities and Christmas events. We bring you the festive happenings from all over the county

Allerford

Filling the community village hall with stalls, a raffle and entertainment, get yourself in the festive spirit at the Allerford Christmas Craft Fair. The fair will take place on December 1 and 2 (Saturday: 10am-4pm and Sunday: 10am-2pm).

Bath

From Thursday November 22 to Sunday December 9, the centre of Bath will be transformed into a festive frenzy with over 200 chalets lining the streets surrounding the Roman Baths and the stunning Bath Abbey.

The award-winning Christmas market will be packed full of gorgeous gifts, freshly baked foodie treats and warming mulled wine. There’s also the opportunity to meet Father Christmas at his grotto or enjoy a skate on the ice rink nearby.

Bristol

Bristol’s Harbourside Christmas Market is set to return this year, hoping to entertain and delight shoppers over four weekends in the run-up to Christmas. There’ll be 45 stalls to peruse as well as plenty of mulled wine, festive decorations and live music to enjoy. The market will be open from 11am-5pm on November 24 and 15 and December 1, 2, 8, 9, 15 and 16.

Join fellow festive revellers at the Christmas Lights Switch On at Cabot Circus on Friday, November 9. Taking place from Friday November 30-Sunday December 23, Bristol’s Local Christmas Market will open outside Marks & Spencer in Broadmead. For the tenth year running, an exciting and eclectic mix of local artists and craft makers will be setting up shop in 22 wooden chalets decked out in traditional festive style.

Burnham-on-Sea

Not quite a shopping opportunity but for fans of a dazzling Christmas light display, Trinity Close or “Britain’s most festive street” gets better and brighter each year, and is definitely worth a visit.

The illuminations have raised thousands of pounds for charity over the year. Watch the video below.

Cheddar

Cheddar’s fantastic Festive Night normally falls on the first Friday of December, meaning this year the event will fall on Friday, December 7.

Dulverton

On Sunday December 2, the town of Dulverton will be lit by Christmas lights on the annual Dulverton by Starlight event. For one Sunday, all the shops will be open for local Christmas shopping, plenty of street entertainment and a dazzling firework display.

Dunster

The annual Dunster by Candlelight is in its 32nd year, with proceeds going to Somerset’s St Margaret’s Hospice.

On Friday December 7 and Saturday December 8, the delightful medieval village will be lit by candlelight with a lantern procession and plenty of festive historic entertainment. Local businesses and the village’s wide variety of stalls will be open for late-night shopping.

Frome

Kick off the Christmas season with Frome’s festive celebrations taking place on Friday, November 30. The event in the town centre features a lantern procession, carols, festive food stalls, and the lights switch-on.

The much-loved Christmas Extravaganza market will return to the Cheese and Grain on the same date, with plenty of unique gifts to treat loved ones to.

Glastonbury

Visit Glastonbury on Saturday November 24 for the town’s annual Frost Fayre with lots for the whole family to enjoy. Dotted around the town’s magnificent Christmas tree, adorned with lights, peruse plenty of stalls, pick up Christmas gifts at the late night shopping event and meet Father Christmas and his helper fairies and elves. The date and details are yet to be announced for the Glastonbury Christmas Tree Festival.

Ilminster

The much loved Ilminster Christmas Victorian Evening returns on Friday, November 23.

Minehead

All aboard! The West Somerset Railway have organised Santa Special and Santa Express (a slightly shorter trip than the Santa Special) for those who fancy a festive trip chugging through the stunning Somerset countryside this Christmas. Santa Special trips will take place from December 22-24 while the Santa Express will take place on various dates from December 21- December 24. Trips will leave from either Minehead or Bishops Lyeard, and visitors can each enjoy a mince pie and festive drink while enjoying the festive atmosphere.

The Minehead Station Christmas Market will take place on Saturday December 1 (11am-5pm) offering a local businesses and producers the opportunity to sell fantastic products.

Porlock

The pretty port village of Porlock will be full of festive cheer from Friday, December 7 with the arrival of the Porlock Santa Festival. Created by local businesses, a selection of Santas will be on display for locals and visitors to vote for their favourite.

On Saturday, December 15 the annual Traditional Porlock Late Night Shopping and Santa Dash will return for later opening hours, festival foodie treats and lively street entertainment.

Hestercombe Gardens, near Taunton

Among the stunning surroundings of Hestercombe Gardens, discover over 60 stalls with unique handcrafted items, gorgeous gift ideas and delicious treats to try.

On Friday, November 17 to Sunday November 18, browse the Christmas market, enjoy the choir carol service and indulge in a creamy hot chocolate with all the trimmings. Tickets are £3 when booked in advance online.

Wincanton

Wincanton’s Christmas Fair returns to the racecourse on Tuesday November 20.

Under the cover and in the warmth of a marquee, browse around 45 independent stalls selling unique artisan gifts to delight family and friends this Christmas. Festive refreshments will be available all day to enjoy.
