‘Tis the season to be jolly! The whole of Somerset will be full of festivities with plenty of charming Christmas markets, late night shopping opportunities and Christmas events. We bring you the festive happenings from all over the county
From Thursday November 23 to Monday December 10, the centre of Bath will be transformed into a festive frenzy with over 200 chalets lining the streets surrounding the Roman Baths and the stunning Bath Abbey.
The award-winning Christmas market will be packed full of gorgeous gifts, freshly baked foodie treats and warming mulled wine. Don’t miss the opportunity to meet Father Christmas at his grotto or enjoy a skate on the ice rink nearby.
Bristol’s Broadmead, part of the popular Bristol Shopping Quarter, will host the city’s German Christmas market. Every evening from Friday November 10 to Sunday December 24, around 40 wooden chalets will provide inventive present ideas, alongside tankards of beer and festive foodie treats to accompany your Christmas shopping in the city centre.
Not quite a shopping opportunity but for fans of a dazzling Christmas light display, Trinity Close or “Britain’s most festive street” gets better and brighter each year, and is definitely worth a visit. The illuminations have raised thousands of pounds for charity over the year. Watch the video below.
Beautifully illuminated with twinkling Christmas lights, Cheddar’s annual Festive Night is a wonderful occasion to soak in the Christmas cheer while shopping for those unique gifts. Taking place on Friday December 1, browse market stalls and shops opening until late, alongside choir song, live music appearances and an appearance from Father Christmas.
On Sunday December 3, the town of Dulverton will be lit by Christmas lights on the annual Dulverton by Starlight event. Expect a dazzling firework display and plenty of street entertainment to ease you into the festive season.
The annual Dunster by Candlelight is in its 31st year, with proceeds going to Somerset’s St Margaret’s Hospice. On Friday December 1 and Saturday December 2, the delightful medieval village will be lit by candlelight with a lantern procession and plenty of festive historic entertainment. Local businesses and the village’s wide variety of stalls will be open for late-night shopping.
Kick off the Christmas season with Frome’s festive celebrations taking place on Friday December 1. The much-loved Christmas Extravaganza market will return to the Cheese and Grain, bursting with unique gifts to treat a loved one to. Events in the town centre include a lantern procession, carols, festive food and lights switch-on.
Visit Glastonbury on Saturday November 25 for the town’s annual Frost Fayre with lots for the whole family to enjoy. Dotted around the town’s magnificent Christmas tree, adorned with lights, peruse plenty of stalls, pick up Christmas gifts at the late night shopping event and visit Santa’s Grotto in the picturesque grounds of the Abbey.
Also around 50 individually decorated trees will stand in St John’s Church on the High Street for the Glastonbury Christmas Tree Festival from Sunday December 11 to Friday January 6.
Embrace the festivities in Ilminster on Friday November 17 when the town’s much-loved Victorian Evening returns for plenty of late shop openings, live music, choral song, entertainment for children and, of course, plenty of Christmas cheer.
From 6.30pm enjoy the annual Lantern Parade before the Christmas lights are switched on at 7pm.
All aboard! The West Somerset Railway have organised Santa Special and Santa Express (a slightly shorter trip than the Santa Special) for those who fancy a festive trip chugging through the stunning Somerset countryside this Christmas. Santa Special trips will take place on various dates from Sunday December 10 to Sunday December 24 while the Santa Express will take place on various dates from Saturday December 2 to December 24. Trips will leave from either Minehead or Bishops Lyeard, and visitors can each enjoy a mince pie and festive drink while enjoying the festive atmosphere.
The West Somerset Railway Christmas Market will take place on Saturday December 9 offering a local businesses and producers the opportunity to sell fantastic products.
The pretty port village of Porlock will be full of festive cheer on Saturday November 25 and Sunday November 26, when Porlock’s Village Hall will be decked with plenty of stalls, full of unique, hand-crafted gifts to peruse at the Exmoor Village Fair.
On Saturday December 9, the annual Traditional Porlock Late Night Shopping and Santa Festival will return for later opening hours, festival foodie treats and lively street entertainment.
Among the stunning surroundings of Hestercombe Gardens, discover over 60 stalls with unique handcrafted items, gorgeous gift ideas and delicious treats to try. On Friday November 17 to Sunday November 20, browse the Christmas market, enjoy the choir carol service and indulge in a creamy hot chocolate with all the trimmings.
Celebrating its 15 anniversary, Wincanton’s Christmas Fair returns to the racecourse on Tuesday November 21. Under the cover and in the warmth of a marquee, browse around 45 independent stalls selling unique artisan gifts to delight family and friends this Christmas. Festive refreshments will be available all day to enjoy.
