A full capacity audience at the Minster Church in Ilminster responded enthusiastically to a programme of Carols and Readings under Musical Director Tim Donaldson in aid of Alzheimer's Society.

A full capacity audience at the Minster Church in Ilminster responded enthusiastically to a programme of Carols and Readings under Musical Director Tim Donaldson on the evening of Monday 17 December in aid of Alzheimers Society. Carols were sung by South Somerset Choral Society and readings were given by broadcasting legends Valerie Singleton and Malcolm Young.

All tickets for the concert, proceeds of which will be presented to Alzheimers Society, were sold almost as soon as they went on sale. The Choral Societys Christmas concert is rapidly becoming a regular fixture in Ilminsters seasonal festivities.

This years selection of music was taken from the Novello Book of Carols, with influences from other European countries, one of which was Finland - the choir singing in Finnish to music by Sibelius. The audience joined in with more conventional favourite carols and enjoyed virtuoso performances on the organ by guest organist Philip Scriven.

A retiring collection was taken for Alzheimers Society whose representative had provided an outline of the Societys work earlier in the programme.

Laura Smith, Community Fundraiser for Alzheimers Society said:

It was a wonderful evening, the choir was fantastic and organist Philip Scriven played some very impressive solo pieces. We were also privileged to hear entertaining festive readings from Valerie Singleton and Malcolm Young. From the collection alone the choir raised over 617 and they expect the total donation to be around 1,500. We are so grateful to the South Somerset Choral Society for organising this concert in aid of Alzheimer's Society. The money raised from this event will go towards helping us to continue to deliver local services for people with dementia such as Ilminster Singing for the Brain and fund research to help us find a cure for the future.
