Church music is an indispensable feature of Ilminster's Christmas celebrations and the town's lovely church, St Mary's Minster, is the focal point of Ilminster's festive cheer. The town's Christmas partying kicked off officially on 16 November with its annual Victorian fair and lights switch-on ceremony. However, the town is now well and truly in festive mode with, says its Chamber of Commerce spokesman, some of the prettiest lights in Somerset. "Because of the layout of our town, our lights are concentrated in a relatively small area and they make a stunning impact - the perfect setting in which to enjoy your Christmas shopping!" he says.

One of the most beautiful and historic settings at which to pick up unusual Christmas gifts is Barrington Court, a Tudor manor house on the outskirts of Ilminster. It will be open free to the public during the first three weekends of December and its public rooms will be decorated with Christmas abundance. Each weekend until 24 December local craftsmen and women will set up stalls in the grounds featuring locally brewed wines, foodstuffs, jewellery and decorative objects. A wonderful way to do your shopping without the hassle of the High Street.

If it's jazz and art you're looking for, then Ilminster's Meeting House arts centre is a must. A Christmas showcase of art and crafts will be on view in the main hall throughout the month.

A very special service for children will take place at St Mary's Church on Christmas Eve when they are invited to dress up as shepherds, angels, wise men or kings and take part in the nativity play. Children not arriving in costume can take their pick from the Church's dressing-up box!
