If it's unusual and fascinating speciality shops you're after this Christmas, wend your way to Wellington, that small country town standing between the River Tone and the beautiful Blackdown Hills. It has a large number of speciality shops from which you can buy a wide range of treats. Wellington boasts gift shops, craft shops, a music shop and an old-fashioned ironmonger. Local meats and cheeses are available and there is an excellent fish shop. A farmers' market is held every third Saturday of the month and from now until Christmas will feature the pick of Somerset's gourmet produce. The big Christmas switch-on takes place on 30 November and the Town Council has a fun-packed evening in store. From face painting to free roundabout rides, a strolling magician and Wellington's brilliant majorettes, the activities continue well into the evening and mince pies will be laid on courtesy of 'The Wellington News'. Santa will be on hand to give out balloons and sweets - so it all adds up to a very special night. Taunton Deane Borough Council traditionally provides free parking on the pre-Christmas Saturdays in Wellington as a goodwill gesture and to boost the town's economy, so charges in Longforth Road, North Street and South Street (Bulford) car parks will be waived on the four Saturdays leading up to Christmas.

WHAT'S ON
