A year and a half ago John and Jane Bradley began a journey in the tourism industry that would push the two of them to their limits, having recognised the need to bring the eight bedroom Dunkery Beacon Country House up to date and at the same time emphasise its character .

So began a series of refurbishments and slowly the grandeur of the country house was brought back to life. The rooms now boast king size four poster beds in the larger suites with a combination of antique furniture and some personal items.

As an internationally-experienced chef, John now draws upon his vast knowledge to create a modern English restaurant service for very appreciable residents and public in their 24-cover dining room and bar.

To complement this service, Jane has produced a worthy wine list supplied by Berry Bros. & Rudd, having spent 15 years working at its Hampshire office and warehouse.

Dunkery Beacon Country House has a very enviable position on the hillside looking south towards Dunkery Beacon summit and the rolling moorland.

Situated in Wootton Courtenay, the hotel has been part of the bustling little community since the 1890s when it was built as a hunting lodge for the aristocracy. During its lifetime, the house has seen many interesting owners come and go and even we suspect played host to the odd spy or two.

Now settled into its new clothes the hotel has a very relaxing feel and calmness where guests can unwind and find a haven of tranquillity from their busy lives, an understanding, which is also reflected in John and Jane’s manner with their guests

Jane comments: “One of the things that has made this all worthwhile is the look on our guests’ faces as they enter their bedroom or even just coming up the driveway and, when they check out, they leave both relaxed and with the next break with us in the planning.

“The heart of Exmoor is such a great rural community and the tranquillity and outstanding views really make this a fantastic location.

“Getting an Award of Excellence from Tripadvisor for the second year running has been the icing on the cake and all the better as it is awarded based on our guest reviews.”

To celebrate their achievement John and Jane are offering a prize to one lucky reader of a two night stay for two for dinner, bed and breakfast.
