More than 50 hopeful pupils from across the Yeovil Schools District arrived at Chilton Cantelo School to take part in this seasons U13 District Schools Trial. The trials are the cornerstone of the selection process for a squad of 16 to represent the Yeovil area in National, South West, Isle of Wight Festival and County competitions over the next three seasons.

Yeovil has an excellent reputation at this level of football and has produced players such as Craig Alcock (Peterborough United and former Yeovil Town Captain), Martin Cranie (Coventry and former premiership player with Southampton and Portsmouth) and Andy Lindegaard (former Yeovil and Cheltenham player).

Kevin Wagland, coach and teacher at Chilton Cantelo, praised the efforts and the quality of the pupils, who were sent from Ansford, Bucklers Mead, Chilton Cantelo, Holyrood, Huish Episcopi, King Arthurs, Maiden Beech, Preston, Sexeys, Stanchester, Swanmead, The Park and Westfield. He hopes that this group of players can emulate the achievements of his last group who won two county titles and the Worrel Shield (South West U15 Cup) in the last two seasons. It has been a real pleasure to coach these teams over the past six seasons along with Michael Hawes and I feel that it is a real step up for children to play for their district. It gives those selected for the final squad a real sense of achievement and the competition for places is always fierce, said Mr Wagland.

The picturesque surroundings and superb facilities of Chilton Cantelo School were used for this first trial and the School is looking forward to hosting the second trial in a weeks time. With a friendly against Yeovil Town Centre of Excellence, this squad will go straight into a National Cup first round tie at home to South and West Dorset.
