Bocabar’s delicious sharing platters

Charlotte Skidmore investigated the sharing platters at Bocabar in Glastonbury

Tucked away in a red brick community building in Glastonbury is a small corner of the Mediterranean, in the shape of deli-style café Bocabar. The Red Brick Building Centre is a community project based in the former Morlands factory. The facility was sold to the community a few years ago and local people have helped transform the centre into the thriving hub of arts, community and education it is today.

A strange place for a thriving café such as this? Certainly not, Bocabar suits the trendy vibe of the centre well and serves fabulous food to suit a range of tastes.

For me, the mezze and deli platter plates were just up my street. I love a good sharing platter or dishes for two to pick at over a great conversation. I just wish I wasn’t driving so that I could have enjoyed a glass of one of the good looking wines and truly believe I was in the Med, just for an hour.

The salads and nibbles on offer at Bocabar deli bar include favourites of mine such as stuffed vine leaves (dolmades), homemade houmous, chilli olives and lovely artisan breads from Lievito in Lovington.

The deli platter includes four salads two dips, leaves and bread and the meat mezze, which we also enjoyed, had Somerset charcuterie, Melksham Farm chicken skewers (gorgeous), houmous, dolmades, stuffed peppers, olives from The Real Olive Company, balsamic onions and other tasty nibbles on offer.

As I’m sure you can tell, there is great emphasis on using local produce and suppliers and I can imagine enjoying a bottle of wine with friends on one of Bocabar’s live music evenings with this lovely food and having a really memorable time.

As well as the food that we tried, there is an extensive menu of other offerings at lunch time at Bocabar including a tasty sounding pan fried fillet of herb crusted South Coast ling. There are also homemade crepes made with Shipton Mill gluten free buckwheat - on my hit list for next time after I saw one on my way out!

Bocabar caters for lots of dietary requirements with its menu, coeliac, vegetarian and vegan, which is really great in an age where the demand is there for this. It also has an evening menu and a separate Sunday lunch offering.
