Charlotte Skidmore takes time out to visit one of her favourite places in the county

The Pig hotels are always an Instagram fan’s dream; beautiful food, beautiful accommodation and beautiful surroundings. And the one near Bath is no exception.

My husband called it his ‘favourite place’ when we escaped there for a night away and I have to admit it rates very highly on my list too.

‘Welcome home’ they told me on check in when we explained we had visited before and indeed that sense of familiarity and reliability came flooding back, along with a sense of excitement and appetite for the evening ahead.

The Hide was our accommodation for the night; a beautiful detached potting¬shed style building set in its own private corner of the grounds. A potting shed it may resemble on the outside but it’s pure luxury on the inside, with a gorgeous king size bed and well stocked parlour awaiting us. The entire top floor is taken up by the bathroom; slipper bath overlooking the countryside and double shower included. You truly feel away from reality here and troubles seem to melt away.

It’s not just the accommodation at The Pig that is fabulous; the food matches up to its reputation and its popularity was apparent with a packed restaurant on a Monday evening. The 25 mile philopsophy is legendary in these parts; with its ingredients and produce all coming from a short radius of the hotel, much of it from its very own gorgeous kitchen garden and resident deer, pigs, chickens and quails. Head chef Kamil even smokes his own salmon.

And it was that smoked salmon that I enjoyed as a starter during my visit, with a cider dressing. The tang of pickled cucumber mixed beautifully with the subtle smoked flavour of the fish and the sweet/sour apple taste from the cider to make a refreshing start to my meal. I persuaded my dining partner to enjoy the whole smoked barbebcue chicken for our main course, served with heritage tomato, garden Welsh onion and celery salad and we were not disappointed. Both beautifully presented and fabulously tasty, it blended so well with the tangy salad and the chicken was fabulously moist.

The Pig never fails to please me and having visited the Bath hotel for the second time I will continue to highly recommend it.

Well done The Pig - we remain Piglets.
