We were looking for a drink made by a Somerset producer that captured the very essence of Somerset and this year’s finalists didn’t disappoint
The Somerset Life Food & Drink Awards are one of the biggest events in the local calendar and it is hugely anticipated by the region’s food and drink industry all year round.
We champion the best local producers, suppliers and businesses that are passionate about Somerset and the future of our local environment.
Thanks to both the nominations of the public and our well-respected judges, we have picked a winner worthy of the ‘Drink Product of the Year’.
This year’s finalists
Homemade and with an emphasis on taste and freshness, Hullabaloos traditional lemonade is made by Leigh and Randa Hucker, with the aim of making people smile- and they certainly succeeded when it came to the judges, who loved their fresh and tasty drinks.
This distinctive Somerset cider is the brainchild of Joe Heley and Todd Studley who make their range of ciders using 100% fresh apple juice and wild yeasts before aging the cider for almost a year to ensure the flavour develops. These traditional methods create a cider that is as tasty as it is traditional.
And the winner is…
Guy Smith and Laura Evans planted the vineyard in Higher Plot in 2008 after a 4 year search for the perfect site to produce the highest possible quality sparkling wine- and that’s exactly what they have achieved. Their fine sparkling wine was described by judges as ‘very moreish’ with lovely, fragrant notes on the taste buds.
