Somerset Life Food & Drink Awards 2018: Newcomer of the Year

The Newcomer of the Year award was open to any anyone in the food and drink industry who had started a new venture in the past couple of years. We wanted to know about the positive impact they have made on their local community and whether they have achieved success further afield

The Somerset Life Food & Drink Awards are one of the biggest events in the local calendar and it is hugely anticipated by the region’s food and drink industry all year round.

These awards recognise our vital Somerset food and drink industry and give recognition to the producers, growers, suppliers and hospitality venues in our wonderful county.

Thanks to both the nominations of the public and our well-respected judges, we have picked a winner worthy of the ‘Newcomer of the Year’ Award, sponsored by Hawksmoor Investment Management.

The finalists:

Gardiner-Whites, Burnham-on-Sea

Set up by ex-IT employees Richard and Jax, Gardiner-Whites are the greengrocers that have taken their community by storm. Judges were impressed by the beautifully presented store, locally sourced produce, and difficult to source products available, such as Old English apple varieties.

Sprague’s Butchers, Wellington

Having been open just ten months, judges were impressed with the locally sourced, top quality meat on offer at this high street butchers. It was noted that Lloyd’s product knowledge was excellent and that he is fully committed to animal welfare, with all lamb and beef, being grass-fed and sourced from his family farm in Devon. He also smokes his own bacon and makes his own sausages!

The winner:

Cow n Bun, Bridgwater

Having only just turned a year old earlier this month, Cow n Bun are already wowing their customers. Serving big juicy burgers and loaded fries they are Bridgwater’s brand new burger bar. Judges were impressed that all their meat is sourced within 20 miles of the shop and two burgers off their mouth watering menu have already won national awards.
