Team behind eat:Festivals launch West Country Food Adventures

The team behind the multi-award winning eat:Festivals have curated a wide range of experiences, tours and pop-ups across the West Country this summer
West Country Food Adventures, sponsored by Old Mill, builds on the Mendip focused Taste the Landscape Trail last year. Delivered by Wells Sustainable Network this two week festival aims to encourage you to meet the makers at their premises, try something new and explore the countryside.
There are dozens of things happen across the region and including:
- Back to Nature foraging walk at the Clavelshay Barn, near Bridgwater
- Make your own scotch eggs at "egg central" aka Nutts Scotch Eggs in Bleadon
- Mad Hatters Teaparty and Famous Five Picnic in Tintinhull
- Brews, Blues and Barbeques at Pitchfork Brewery in Hewish
- Farm tours at West Ilkton on Exmoor and Wookey Farm near Wells
- Tastings and tours at cider makers including Harrys Cider in Long Sutton, Dorset Nectar near Bridport and Barley Wood in Wrington
- A tour and tasting at Feltham's Farm, the home of Renegrade Monk cheese near Templecombe
- And new festivals in Crewkerne and Trull
Organsier Sarah Milner Simonds told us, "When we chose to live in Somerset, we got to know our new home by eating and drinking our way around the county. A basket of apples or little shed of eggs by a cottage garden would have us screech to a halt for the freshest produce. This was real farming, with little input other than sun, soil, rain and deep understanding. We discovered cider makers who'd tell us the names of every tree, and bakers from dynasties of village fête-winners. Little by little we understood how remarkable and precious were the smokers, the shrimp-catchers, the charcuterers and the wine-makers, who use this unique landscape to develop our heritage of food and drink. It made us relish our finds more, because we knew the stories of how much skill and graft had gone into their creation. But, like Breton oysters that can only be tasted in Paris, often the best produce seemed difficult to get hold of in the place it was created."
Co-organiser Bev Milner Simonds continued, "So we started a food festival, which has now grown to 16 eat:Festivals this year, spanning towns in North, South, East and West Somerset, with the greatest produce from the land around them. You're very welcome to all of them; they're free and fun and keep winning awards. But it all started with little adventures into food and drink.
"Happily, so many of these producers have now thrown open their doors to us all, to come and discover how their awesome flavours are made. West Country Food Adventures are an invitation to get to the root of what the land is for. You can ask questions, taste test, have a go or just have a picnic and go & explore a farm. We've tried to make it easy to get to by bus, bike, horse or on foot. Most of the events are free and many can be self-led. If you've been looking for an excuse to delve into the levels or moors, coast or hills of this beautiful part of the world, these West Country Food Adventures are a great place to start.
