Martin Roberts: A great big winter hug

Presenter of the popular BBC property auction show, Homes under the Hammer, I’m a Celeb 2016 campmate and writer Martin Roberts tells us what Christmas means to him
If there’s one time of the year that makes me more nostalgic than the others, it’s when autumn slips into winter. One of my earliest memories, probably from when I was four or five, is walking in a forest on a blustery autumn day, kicking the leaves and watching the trees sway back and forth.
Although the nights are drawing in there’s a whisper of anticipation of the coming weeks, with all the excitement leading up to Christmas; the opening of the first window on the Advent calendar and Christmas fayres and drab shops are brought to life by tinsel and fairy lights.
Our county is superbly equipped to make the most of the virtues of this magical season. We are blessed with some of the most divine countryside in the UK, with forest walks within easy reach of most of us. A leaf-kicking, conker gathering, heart warming, mind clearing ramble is a perfect excuse for a long weekend away or an idyllic Sunday afternoon.
Country pubs are raking out grates and stoking their real fires and summer menus are being replaced by hearty winter fayre, bursting with homemade soups, mouth watering home made pies and freshly foraged apple and blackberry crumble.
Outdoor markets in our lovely towns and cities provide an inspirational shopping option to the superstores, but village shops too turn themselves into mini winter wonderlands.
So we are packing away the buckets and spades, blow-up dinghy and body boards and digging out the warm jumpers and welly boots to indulge ourselves in this lovely time of year.
We are waving a fond farewell to what was, without doubt, a beautiful summer and autumn and giving a huge welcoming hug to winter and what it has in store for us.
