I’ve just returned from presenting the Somerset Life Food & Drink Awards 2016. And what a joyous and celebratory event it was!
There is something re-assuringly comforting and indescribably appealing about celebrating the best that a place has to offer by recognising the food and drink that’s lovingly created and served there.
Somehow announcing the winner of the Best Sunday lunch category sums up something magical and leads to images of crisp autumn Sundays, where golden leaf covered trees rise from a mist covered valley, and the warm glow of a log fire welcomes ramblers to the stone-floored interior of some glorious country pub.
‘Artisan breads’ and ‘home made chutneys and jams’ aren’t produced on faceless industrial estates, but in stone-built, wood fired ovens in the barns of farmhouses or on battered heirloom pans on the top of cottage ranges.
And the winners didn’t disappoint. Charmingly, a huge proportion were there in person to collect their awards or join in celebrating the success of others.
The butchers, who looked the part, you’d trust to give the best possible advice on how to roast one of their locally-sourced and hand-reared joints.
Friendly family groups from businesses that have evolved only though the hard work of generations, or the spirited entrepreneurship of committed individuals or couples were all there to share the warm adulation of the crowd and bask in a well-deserved moment of glory.
Even global brands, like our own Thatcher’s Cider, sending the head of the actual Thatcher family to join in a celebration of all that is good about the county. I can’t imagine Mr Carlsberg turning up at a similar event, if he even exists!
So why did so many people go out of their way to be there on the night?
To pick up a coveted award in person?
Yes, to a degree.
To enjoy an evening out with friends and colleagues? Well, I suppose so.
But above all, I believe, to share in a few hours of celebration of two of the vital ingredients in the secret recipe that makes this glorious county what it is. Our Somerset food and drink.
Cheers to that.
