Review: The Battleaxes in Wraxall

This fine country pub, with its trendy décor and fantastically-presented food is a real treat for those of us who prefer quality and quantity at the same time.
Our meal started with one of the freehouse’s excellent ‘Pig Out’ sharer boards, packed full of meaty goodness.
The bbq pork and pulled pork cake were highlights for me, but every single morsel was absolutely delicious.
Presented on a big, wooden board, the sharer, at £12.95, was excellent value for two.
My dining companion mentioned to me that she has had the ‘Fishy Business’ board as a main course before and says it was more than enough for one and equally as good as the meat board.
We both followed our sharer starter (with a much welcome small break in between) with a perfectly-cooked ribeye steak. Mine was medium, pink in the middle how I like it and the knife just glided through it.
Do add the delicious sautéed mushrooms for an extra treat and no steak would be complete without a sauce – peppercorn in this case and definitely homemade.
I finished off with a West Country cheeseboard as desserts aren’t really my thing, but I have to say, from the look of my companion’s hibiscus and red berry tea pavlova with Chantilly cream, pomegranate and orange, I could definitely have been tempted.
This pub and restaurant is perfect for a friends’ night out, a romantic meal for two, or even a relaxing bottle of wine and a natter with your mum.
