One of Somerset's most ravishing Christmas rituals is that of Dulverton by Starlight. This lovely village on the edge of Exmoor is transformed throughout December until Twelfth Night into a twinkling fantasy of white lights and Christmas trees. If there is one place which can lay claim to restoring the magic of Christmas as it used to be, it is pretty Dulverton. On 2 December Father Christmas himself will be arriving in a carriage drawn by two magnificent Suffolk Punches, which will be available for public rides throughout the afternoon. A perennially popular event is carol-singing around the tree in Bank Square, and this year the Wiveliscombe Town Band will provide musical accompaniment. Organisers hope to round off the evening with a finale of white fireworks against the dramatic backdrop of the church, while an exhibition of nativity scenes owned by local families will be on show in the Town Hall throughout the weekend of 1-2 December. Davina Jelley of the local business No 7 Dulverton promises visitors a wonderful taste of Christmas. "Exmoor is a beautiful area, whatever the season - but at Christmas it becomes totally magical," she says. "Whether you have plans for shopping or just wish to experience a serene and beautiful atmosphere, Dulverton by Starlight provides it."
