Hundreds of eager volunteers turned up to help launch British Tourism Week on Weston-super-Mares Grand Pier on Saturday 12th March.
Dance groups from all over the area, including a Burlesque group, came along to join in a giant Conga up and down the Pier.
Minister for Tourism and Weston-super-Mare MP John Penrose launched the fifth British Tourism Week.
Grand Pier owner Kerry Michael said: I was delighted that our attraction was chosen to launch British Tourism Week. We have a lot to celebrate now that we have re-opened and a Party on the Pier seemed a great way to do that. I cant emphasise enough how important tourism is to the local economy. Tourism in the West Country is worth more than 1 billion per annum and Weston-super-Mare is the largest local destination for that spend.
Patricia Yates, Co-Chair of British Tourism Week said: The Grand Pier was the obvious choice to lead our Party on the Pier launch for British Tourism Week 2011.
The event was also attended by the Patron of the National Piers Society, the actor Timothy West, who presented the brother and sister owners Kerry and Michelle Michael with their Pier of the Year award.
