Enterprise Europe Network South West is encouraging Somerset businesses to trade abroad, after helping 25 firms in the region forge partnerships with companies overseas.

The organisation offers free and impartial help and advice to businesses looking to trade in Europe. Its partner alert service is a key part of this offering, and features over 11,000 opportunities across 44 countries.

The service allows companies to post requests online for trade partnerships, or to respond to requests from others. Current opportunities are incredibly varied and include a Spanish patisserie company looking for distributors in the UK and a UK-based hotel chain looking for European agents to promote its IT solutions.

Andrew Fawcett, innovation adviser for Somerset at Enterprise Europe Network, said: Following the recently announced government cuts there is a major emphasis on growth within the private sector, and trading and partnering abroad is a key route to achieve this. Our partner alert service can match businesses in Somerset with opportunities overseas and help kick start growth within the county.

The partnership opportunities vary from simple distributing opportunities and franchises to collaboration for research. These partnerships can be hugely valuable to a company and are a great way to grow a businesses reach into Europe and help share costs and risks.

Enterprise Europe Network has facilitated 25 partnership agreements across the South West, including Metron Technology, a computer systems and software development company based in Taunton which signed a commercial partnership agreement with Greek company IVIS INFO. Enterprise Europe Network has also helped over 1,000 companies through its telephone advice service which gives guidance on funding streams, EU legislation, intellectual property and market research.

Andrew said: Its a fantastic achievement to have so many companies in the South West now working internationally thanks to the partnership alert service and we are excited about helping more Somerset companies explore trading opportunities overseas.

We have a team of dedicated advisers in every county, as well as research and development (R&D) and intellectual property experts, who are on hand to visit businesses and give them the advice and guidance they need to make international trade a reality.
